Charles Reed

Chancellor, California State University System

As the Chancellor of the California State University System, Dr. Reed is the chief executive officer of the country’s largest senior system of public higher education. Dr. Reed provides leadership to 44,000 faculty and staff and 405,000 students on 23 campuses and seven off-campus centers. The system’s annual budget is more than $5 billion. Dr. Reed became Chancellor of the California State University System in 1998. He was the Chancellor of the State University System of Florida from 1985-1998. He served as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Governor of Florida from 1984-1985, and Deputy Chief of Staff, Director of Legislative Affairs, and Education Policy Coordinator from 1979 until 1984. Prior to serving the governor, Charles Reed was the Director of the Office of Education Planning, Budgeting and Evaluation in the Florida Department of Education. Dr. Reed began his education career at George Washington University where he was an Associate Professor of Education.
